Hiring an Arborist: 5 Signs You’ve Picked a Professional

1/12/2017

Picture
An arborist helps maintain your trees. Arborists treat diseases, contain the damaging effects of weather and guide proper growth.
You know you need to hire a tree expert to get answers to your questions about tree health, but you want to make sure you’re hiring the right person — after all, you care about your trees’ longevity.
What Is an Arborist?
The official definition of an arborist is “tree surgeon.” Just like medical surgeons, arborists are highly trained experts who must pass extensive testing to maintain their licenses.
Here are six signs of an arborist you can depend on:
1. They’re a Member of a Reputable Organization
Ask about their professional memberships. The most popular certification is through the International Society of Arboriculture. Depending on your location, it might be required by state law that arborists hold a professional license to practice, so don’t just ask for your own benefit — make sure they’re following the law.
2. They’re Licensed and Insured
Besides a professional license, they should also have a license and insurance for their business. You don’t want someone trimming branches on your property unless they can pay for the damage if something goes wrong.
They should carry personal and property coverage, and each worker on their team should be fully insured under their policy. Otherwise, you could be held liable if one of their employees is hurt on the job.
3. They Don’t Rush You to Make a Decision
Professional arborists will make educated, informed recommendations, but they’ll ultimately let you make the final decision on how to treat the problem. It’s your tree, and it’s your property. They won’t try to pressure you into a decision by offering a “one-day-only” rush sale on their services.
4. They’re Not Quick to Suggest Topping or Removal
Trees should only be topped or removed under dire circumstances. An “arborist” who seems overly excited to chop away at your tree or remove it is a red flag. Highly trained arborists know the value of preserving the tree whenever possible.
5. They Aren’t a One-Stop Shop
The best tree surgeons know all there is to know about their craft. That’s why they offer much more than one service. They won’t just trim your branches. They will offer fertilization, pest treatment, bracing, cabling and more.
At Rivendell Tree Experts, we’re committed to providing quality service at affordable prices for our clients throughout Utah. Hiring an arborist doesn’t have to be complicated -- call us today for more information and a free quote.

I'm glad you mentioned that a good arborist will ultimately leave the final decision on what to do with the tree up to you. It's good to know that they'll likely offer a few different options for treatment and trimming before having you decide, though. I don't know the first thing about tree care, so I would definitely need to have the options explained to me beforehand!

My favorite part of this article is when you said that a professional arborist would tell you everything you need to know and will not push you to get their services fast just to avail the discounts. With that in mind, I will make sure that the company that I will hire has this characteristic first before I pick them. I like how you mentioned that when someone hires an arborist to take a look at the state of their tree, they're quick to suggest alternative options and that tree removal is the ultimate last resort--other viable options to save the tree would be pitched first and the tree examined to see if it can still be saved. Another thing to consider is that they offer more than just tree trimming services--they will offer much more than that like pest treatment, fertilization, as well as bracing and cabling (should it apply). While I have no need yet to call for an arborist, it's nice to know that they have quite a selection of services to avail of when the time comes.

I use a folding handsaw for pruning out low hanging branches that get in my way! I generally use them to cut limbs an inch or two in diameter but some saws can cut through 4 inches. And then there are pole saws (too unwieldy for me) and chainsaws (they frighten me)! If you use these tools I suggest you have protective gear on and know what you’re doing OR call someone that does! That’s what I do.
Thanks

Besides a professional license, they should also have a license and insurance for their business. You don’t want someone trimming branches on your property unless they can pay for the damage if something goes wrong. They should carry personal and property coverage, and each worker on their team should be fully insured under their policy. Otherwise, you could be held liable if one of their employees is hurt on the job.
Thanks

It's interesting to know that you need to consider hiring a tree trimming company that has the right insurance to deal with your problems. My wife and I noticed that a tree in our backyard looks damaged, and we are looking for advice. I will let her know about your recommendations to choose the right tree care service company to help us.

My dad has been wanting to hire a tree service that will be able to cut down the old oak tree at his backyard because it's already starting to block his window view. I agree with you that it would be best to ask the prospective professional proof of his insurance and license because this will protect my dad, just in case a damage occurs. You're also right that the chosen service will suggest helpful recommendations but will not force us.

I liked it when you mentioned before hiring a professional tree service, it is always important to ensure that they are insured and license to do the job. My neighbor has been wanting to cut down a tree behind her house since she is planning to do a renovation. I will advise her to find a service that has the right license and insurance to get the tree removed.

My mom has some blackberry bushes in her backyard that we love because they provide us with so much fruit that we end up getting to make freezer jam every year. However, the bushes are starting to take over the yard and grow over the fence. My mom doesn't want to trim the bushes by herself because she is worried that she will kill the roots, so she is thinking about hiring a professional. You give very good advice in this article to look for a company that is insured so that they can pay for any potential damages if something goes wrong.

Thanks for making it clear that trees should only be removed in dire circumstances. Too many people overlook this and assume that tree removal is the only option. I think I'll hire an arborist to make that decision for me.

It really helped when you said it's crucial for a tree trimming professional to be insured and licensed. The other day, my fiance and I took a walk down our neighborhood, and we noticed a tree that looked sick. We asked the neighbors around, but they seem to know nothing, and we're worried about it having a contagious disease. That's why we're looking for a professional's help. Thanks for the information about what to consider when selecting an arborist.
